Obituary for Frederick Charles Shanaman

Frederick Charles Shanaman, Jr. passed away October 4th, 2005, at Allenmore Hospital after battling cancer. He was 72.He was born in Tacoma on June 21st, 1933; he graduated from Vermont Academy and Dartmouth College. He continued his education with graduate work in business at the University of British Columbia. Fred was a well-known local business and civic leader. He was president of Pyrodyne Corporation and Toys Galore. He authored several books on business entrepreneurship including the highly successful Â"101 Money Making Ideas for Young Adults.” Fred received a Presidential appointment to the Commerce Department and worked as Regional Northwest Representative for the Secretary of Commerce from 1975 to 1977. He served on the Board of Directors for Puget Sound Bank and Bank of Bellingham. Fred was most proud of his work with Key Bank on the Community Reinvestment Act National Board, which allowed him to be involved with many local and national community projects.Fred truly believed in and loved Tacoma. He worked constantly to promote Tacoma and better the quality of life for his neighbors. He loved his work as President of the Visitor and Convention Bureau, on the Christmas Parade Committee and as a past Board Member of Bellarmine, Annie Wright School, Tacoma Symphony, Mary Bridge Hospital, and many others. Fred was a Â"sports person.” He founded the Sport Commission, was a major principal in the Tacoma Rockets Hockey Team and a driving force in the creation of the Shanaman Sports Museum. He also loved to compete. He rediscovered his love of track and field at age 57, winning many championships and setting records as a Senior Masters Athlete in the hammer and shot put. His wife of 43 years, Jane Shanaman, son Rick C. Shanaman, and daughter Mara A. Burke, grandchildren Taylor and Devin Shanaman and Zoe Burke survive him.A celebration of the life of Fred C. Shanaman, Jr. will be held at 4:30 pm on Tuesday, October 11th at Annie Wright School.
