Obituary for Robert Ray Hanson

Robert Ray Hanson
Born in Tacoma on Sept. 16, 1925 to Roy and Helen Hanson. With family members by his side, Bob passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 25th, 2013, at the age of 87. On Oct 14, 1952, Bob found the love of his life, Ivy. They met in a bowling alley in Tacoma. Six months later they were married and she was by his side for the rest of his life, 3 months short of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Bob attended Lincoln High School in Tacoma. He left school in the 11th grade to serve in the Army as WWII broke out. He served 2 years deployed in India. After being discharged from the Army, he earned his GED and went to work for the City of Tacoma Public Works Dept. where he was employed for 36 years. He was well known for his work ethic and always did things himself rather than asking for help. He retired in 1986. After retiring, he was always on the go; working in the garden, recycling (the Cardboard Man), and doing things for others. From a young age Bob loved to fish. He spent many hours on the Puget Sound catching salmon. He also enjoyed bowling, but most of all he loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events, especially soccer games, bowling leagues and tournaments. He was a simple, kind, gentle, family man who will be truly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph, Ray, and Rowland. He is survived by his wife Ivy, son Robert Jr. "Bobby" (Carrie), daughters Cheryl Stratton (David) and Rhonda Winchell (Lance), brother Roy, sisters Catherine, Helen, Dorothy, and Sharon, grandchildren Brandi, Bryan (Dawn), Chris (Corie), Sean (Carlie), Ryan, Scott, and Daniel, great grandchildren Jayana, Bryan, Jamaree, Drionna, Bailey and Blake. A celebration of his life will be held early this summer.
