Obituary for Maile Sakumoto

Maile Sakumoto
Born December 2, 1944 to Myles Emilio Abad Cables and Consuelo Padua Munar Cables; died January 30, 2013, surrounded by family, from complications of autosomal dominant polycystic liver disease and hemorrhagic stroke. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Raj Narayanan and Franciscan Hospice House.

Maile was also known as "Mila" to family and friends. Predeceased by parents Myles and Consuelo, sister Carmelita Augustin, and brother Robert. Survived by husband Howard, daughters Dawn Sakumoto of Tacoma, WA, and Kara Sakumoto of Shawnee, KS, son Kurt (Becky) Sakumoto of Tacoma, WA, granddaughters Karissa Sakumoto, Kaleena Myers, Nina and Miya Sakumoto, and grandson Alex Lengenfelder Sakumoto. Maile also leaves behind sisters Tehani Genevieve Cables of La Jolla, CA and Estrellita "Star" (Pat) Staeheli of Kent, WA, brothers from Spanaway, WA, Loreto "Joe" (Melba) Cables and Rodolfo "Rudy" (Lina) Cables, Arthur Cables of Manila, PI, and Benjamin Cables of Tacoma, WA. She also leaves behind a large extended Cables family spanning three generations. Also survived by maternal aunt Maura Gutierrez of Waipahu, Hawaii, as well as cousins and in-laws in Hawaii, and special childhood friends Judy Mina Imori, Erlinda Bonifacio Sindler, and Paulette Mina Anderson. Maile attended schools in the Tacoma and Clover Park School Districts, graduating in 1963 from Clover Park.
She pursued secretarial science at Knapp Business College, putting her expertise to work with various employers, including the Boeing Company, Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), and her personal home typing business (before there were computers!), wherein she assisted PLU students with printed materials for school projects, dissertations and abstracts and thesis papers. There was many a graduate student who came knocking at her door at the last minute, begging for help in completing their papers - and she never turned any of them away. She hosted several international students while employed at PLU.

Maile was a professional dancer as a teen and young adult, performing ethnic Filipino dances, Hula Kahiko (ancient hula) and Hula Auana (modern hula). She shared Hawaiiana with family, friends, and even taught adult beginning hula classes at PLU. She was always praised for her expressive hula dance movements. Maile was an accomplished pianist, violinist and violist, and was a member of the inaugural Tacoma Youth Symphony as principal violist. She assisted brother Ben at his parishes by singing in the choir and performing liturgical dance.

Maile had a knack to vocally harmonize in song without written music. An avid runner in younger days, she participated in running events, including the Sound to Narrows and Seattle Seafair Torchlight Run. More recently, Maile crafted memorial crosses for deceased parishioners at her church, meticulously writing each decedent's name in calligraphy. Her joys were ours, and we will miss her dearly. Aloha 'oe, Maile! (farewell to you). Ag kikita tayon-to manen (we will see each other again). A hui hou kakou (until we meet again).
