He was raised on a dry wheat farm near Milton, North Dakota until the age of 24. At the start of WWII, Maury moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the Curtiss Wright School of Aeronautics. After graduation, he was hired by Douglas Aircraft to assemble dive bombers for Norway and the US Navy. He worked in Iran and Iraq for two years. He was then transferred to India where he maintained the C-46 transport planes. Their mission was to fly supplies and arms over the Himalayas to China. Maury left India in 1944 to work for United Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyoming. While there, he was drafted in the Navy and based out of San Francisco, California. He was honorably discharged at the end of 1946. Shortly thereafter he was hired at McChord AFB where he worked until his retirement in 1981.

He met and married Valencia Deltha Bures in 1953. They lived and raised a family in Tacoma in a house built by his own hands. He loved family, classical music, gardening, photography, hiking and hunting. Maury was a strong Christian and passed his beliefs onto his children.
